Buying and Selling Questions

What is the difference between a boat survey and a sea trial?

A marine survey assesses a boat’s condition within an agreed scope; a sea trial lets you observe it operating on the water. An engine inspection may be a separate specialist task. Before buying, ask what each appointment covers and what written findings you will receive. Do not assume a pleasant on-water ride answers every condition question.

What it depends on

The terms used in listings and conversations can be broad. Ask the people doing the work to explain what is included. Will the boat be hauled? Which systems will be tested? Is an engine technician attending? Which areas cannot be inspected?

BoatUS describes the buyer’s surveyor as an independent adviser and distinguishes a general survey from specialist engine diagnostics. Its guide to the boat survey explains the roles involved.

Plan the questions before the appointments

Give your inspector the listing and any specific concerns. Keep a list of items that were demonstrated, items that were not and questions that require further evidence. Confirm scheduling and access with the broker, seller and inspectors. Review the written findings with the appropriate specialist rather than relying on a verbal summary at the dock.

How we help

Silver King Yachts can help coordinate the practical steps around a boat you are considering. Your independent surveyor and engine technician provide their own assessments. Tell the broker about those appointments early so access and timing can be discussed.

Common questions

Does a sea trial replace an independent survey?

No. Seeing a boat operate does not provide the same information as an agreed inspection and written condition report.

Does every survey include engine diagnostics?

Do not assume it does. Ask the surveyor what engine checks are included and discuss specialist diagnostics with a qualified technician for that engine.

Who should explain a survey finding?

Ask the surveyor who recorded it. Ask an appropriate specialist about further diagnosis or remedial work. The broker can help coordinate access and the next discussion.
